アルゼンチンで最も古いワイナリーのひとつ Pascual Toso （パスカル・トソ）。イタリアのピエモンテ州でワイン産業に従事していた一家出身のパスカル・トソ氏は、アルゼンチンに移り住んだ際、アルゼンチンのワイン醸造の可能性を確信し、1890年に最初のワイナリーを設立。その後、ワインメーカーのコンサルタントを雇ったりさらに新しいワイナリーを設立するなどしてビジネスを拡大。知名度も上がり、現在は世界中にワインを輸出するまでになる。アルゼンチンの主要品種である Malbec を代表に、様々な品種のワインを造っている。

Whole Foods のホリデーシーズンワインで見つけた珍しいアルゼンチンの泡。乾杯には申し分無いが、100% Chardonnay のきりっとしたエレガントさは感じられず、可もなく不可もなく値段相応。

2009 Yellow + Blue Torrontes Cafayate

紙の容器に入ったユニークなワイン Yellow + Blue。Yellow + Blue = Green。ガラスボトルの代わりに紙パックを使うことで、輸送時の燃料を削減し環境に優しく（Green）という考え方のもと2007年設立。創設者は、イーストベイの有名なワインインポーター Kermit Lynch で10年以上勤めた経験のある Matt Cain 氏。スペインやアルゼンチンからブドウを、パッケージをドイツから輸入し、カリフォルニアでボトリングして販売。ワインはオーガニック認定つき（Green）。

K&L のテイスティングでユニークな味わいが気に入り購入。アルゼンチンの Cafayate 地方で広く栽培されている Torrontes （トロンテス）種から造られたワイン。ピーチやメロンのような、ヴィオニエかゲヴェルツトラミナーを彷彿とさせる甘い香りが印象的。ただし、味わいは香りとはまったく異なり、やや甘いけれど基本的にはドライで辛口。ユニークな戦略で品質が高く、コストパフォーマンスも高くて環境にも優しい面白いワイナリー。

REGION
Originally from Galicia in northwest Spain, Torrontes is now the distinctive and greatest white wine grape in all of Argentina. Our organic Torrontes is made with organically-grown grapes from the picturesque village of Cafayate, Argentina’s heartland for this varietal.

Cafayate Valley has some of the world’s highest-elevation vineyards, typically at 5,500 feet. (In comparison, a high elevation vineyard in California is 1,500 to 2,200 feet.) Such an elevation guarantees diurnal temperature extremes, where afternoon temperatures plummet at night, typically from the mid-80s during the day to the mid-50s at night. This preserves acidity, which would otherwise “bake out” during warm nights.

The valley sees little rain (three to six inches a year) and tremendous sunshine. Surrounded by the Andes Mountains, the vineyards are irrigated thanks to ample water from mountain snowpacks. Because the Cafayate Valley is so dry, it lends itself easily to organic vineyard practices.

甘くパワフルな果実の香り。レッドプラムやストロベリーのよう。おっとは風邪薬のシロップみたいと。14%以上の強いアルコール臭。2日目はより煙っぽくてこのマルベックらしさがよめは好き。100% Malbec。（2007ヴィンテージからは100% Malbecでないらしい。）

スーパーマーケット Whole Foods で見つけたアルゼンチンのザクロのスパークリングワイン。前回飲んだアルメニアのザクロワインと一緒に売られており、ラベルもインポーターも同じだが生産国が違う。前回のザクロワインに比べれば甘さ控えめで、泡ということもあってかずっと飲みやすい。口の中にポリフェノールが残る、しっかりザクロ味で悪くない。（真っ赤な人工コルクがものすごく固くて、抜くのに一苦労。ひねって押し上げた。）

アルゼンチンの Mendoza （メンドーサ）ワイン地域にある Don Miguel Gascón （ドン・ミゲル・ガスコン）。かつては世界最大のワイナリーと言われた Gallo （E. & J. Gallo Winery）が手がけるブランドのうちの一つ。（現在は規模で言えば世界2番目、トップは Constellation Brands。）そしてアルゼンチンといえば Malbec。

口に含んだ飲んだ瞬間、パワフルパワフル。強烈に煙っぽい。あまりタンニンが強くないカベルネ、土っぽさはサンジョベーゼのよう。（という感想は、これまで飲んだマルベックとまったく同じ。実はわかりやすい品種なのかも。）マルベックの特徴であるブルーベリーやヴァイオレットの香り、思い起こせばそんな感じ。時々飲むにはいい。

各方面から高い評価をもらっていることと、Malbec を単体品種として飲んでみたくて購入。香りは Cabernet Sauvignon のよう。でも口当たりはミディアムボディで、酸味控えめ Pinot Noir のよう。なんとも不思議なワイン。2日目は Sangiovese のような酸味が出てきてよりどっしりした。（よめはたくさんは飲めなかったけど。）ブルーベリーやヴァイオレットのような香りは Malbec の特徴らしいので、Malbec 品種を知りたければ飲んでみてもいいかも。

2004 Kaiken Ultra Malbec

チリワインで有名な Montes Alpha がアルゼンチンのブドウに魅せられて造ったのが Kaiken Wines。Kaiken は Cabernet Sauvignon と Malbec を造っており、今回飲んだのは通常ブレンド用に使われることの多い Malbec。が、別のワインを随分飲んだ後だったのでほとんど味がわからず。翌日飲んでみる。深い色、深い香り、Cabernet Sauvignon と区別がつかない。でも、フルボディの Cab ほど渋みやタンニンは強くなく飲み易い。よめお気に入り。（Wine Enthusiast 91 ポイントは、アルゼンチン・ワインでは最高得点なんだそう。：2007.02 時点）
