イタリア・ピエモンテ州にある Baloro （バローロ）の名門 Vietti （ヴィエッティ）。ヴィエッティのワイン造りの歴史は19世紀に遡るが、Mario Vietti （マリオ・ヴィエッティ）氏により Vietti の名前でワインが世に出たのは1919年が初めて。1952年に Luciana Vietti （ルチアーナ・ヴィエッティ）の夫である Alfredo Currado （アルフレド・クッラド）氏が引き継ぎ、ピエモンテのトップ生産者として、またアメリカ市場に初めて輸出したワイナリーのひとつとして高い評価を得る。Villero （ヴィッレーロ）、Brunate （ブルナーテ）、Rocche （ロッケ）、Castiglione （カスティリオーネ）などいくつもの銘柄畑を所有し、当時まだ革新的だった "シングル・ヴィンヤード（single vineyard）" または "クリュ（cru-designated）" ワインを造ってきた。現在ワイナリーを取り仕切るのは、アルフレド氏の義理の息子 Mario Cordero （マリオ・コルデーロ）氏。

軽さと骨太さが不思議に同居するバルベーラ。色は濃い紫。イタリアらしい鉄、土のようなミネラル感はしっかりと感じられ、後味にバルベーラらしい鮮やかな果実味が残る。オークも少し。食事にとてもよく合い、コストパフォーマンスの高い一本。この造り手のバローロも以前飲んでいる。

Winemaking: the grapes are selected from young vineyards, approximately 10 years old, in Agliano d’Asti that are planted 4,800 plants per hectare with a yield of 39 hl/ha. The must is kept, for 12 days, in stainless steel tanks at 30-32°C.

Aging: at the end of the malolactic fermentation, the wine is moved into French oak barrels or Slavonian oak casks for 12 months, then into steel tanks 2 months before bottling. The wine is bottled unfiltered to retain complexity.

Description: ruby purple color with ripe red cherry aromas with hints of mineral and vanilla. A dry, medium bodied red wine with refreshing acidity (making it perfect to pair with food) and soft tannins, the Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne is well balanced with good integration of oak, good complexity and a finish of more red cherries.

Food Pairings: antipasti, rich salads, grilled seasoned vegetables, hearty soups, pastas or with breaded veal, pork, chicken with light sauces

K&L Club Italiano 2009 12月のワイン。
イタリア・ピエモンテ州の Colli Tortonesi （コッリ・トルトネージ地区）でワイン造りを行うワインメーカー Andrea Mutti （アンドレア・ムッティ）氏。バローロやバルバレスコを擁するピエモンテの中では知名度の低い同地域の中で、彼は気の遠くなるような70,000本にも及ぶブドウ樹の剪定を自らの手で行う生産者である。

今まで飲んだバルベーラの中では濃いめの一本。チェリー系の香りとイタリアらしい土っぽさが健在で、なかなか美味しい一本。

I love this wine! So many sweet fruit flavors, with soft and supple textures, length, balance; it has everything. This wine comes from the Colli Tortonesi all the way at the eastern border of Piedmont. This isn't a zone that is well known outside of Italy (or inside of Italy for that matter), but Andrea Mutti is a devoted and talented winemaker, and his wines transmit his passion. K&L Club Italiano 2009 9月のワイン。
イタリア・ピエモンテ州、Barbera d'Asti （バルベーラ・ダスティ）生産地の中心に位置するワインリー Agostino Pavia e Figli （アゴスティーノ・パヴィア・フィリ）。Bricco Blina、Moliss、la Marescialla の3段階のバルベーラ・ダスティを生産している。Bricco Blina はステンレスタンク発酵、Moliss は巨大な樽でしばらく熟成させる。今回の la Marescialla は樹齢50年の自社畑のブドウを使い、通常サイズの樽（French Barriques）で12ヶ月ほど熟成させたもの。

Barbera d'Asti （バルベーラ・ダスティ）はピエモンテ州の主に Asti 地方で作られる、イタリアのバルベーラでは最も有名なDOCGワイン（※2008年にDOCからDOCGに昇格）。85%以上のバルベーラ種が義務付けられている。Barbera d'Asti ワインは鮮やかな色でエレガント、一方 Barbera d'Alba は濃い色で骨格があり力強い果実味のあるワインに仕上がる傾向にある。最低アルコール度数12.5%以上、最低熟成期間1年以上（うち6ヶ月以上は樽熟成）を満たした Barbera d'Asti は "Superiore" を名乗ることが出来る。

2006年はピエモンテの当たり年。バルベーラも例外ではなく、豊かな酸味と素晴らしい熟成度を備えている。今回のワインはバルベーラらしい華やかな酸味は感じられないが、代わりにチェリーの深みと複雑さを備える。それは50年の Old Vine からくる風味なのか。これはこれで悪くない。

This small, seven-hectare family estate is located in the heart of the production area for Barbera d'Asti. This estate makes three "crus" of Barbera. La Marescialla is obtained from the careful selection of the grapes coming from one of the oldest vineyards on the estate and is refined for about a year in barriques. 2006 Cantine Valpane Barbera del Monferrato Rosso Pietro

K&L Club Italiano 2009 8月のワイン。
イタリア・ピエモンテ州の北東、ほぼロンバルディア州との州境 Monferrato （モンフェッラート）地方にあるワイナリー Cantine Valpane Winery。Arditi 一族により100年以上ワインを造り続けている。モンフェッラート地方は石灰岩（limestone）豊かな土壌で、Barbera 種の栽培に適しているのだそう。Barbera del Monferrato （バルベーラ・デル・モンフェッラート）はピエモンテの DOC で、Barbera 種を85%以上使用することが義務付けられている。

2006年はピエモンテの当たり年。バルベーラも例外ではなく、豊かな酸味と素晴らしい熟成度を備えている。香りは earthy なイタリア。でも深みもあって枯れたボルドーのようですらある。フルーティさも十分。柿、プルーン。（K&Lによると、まさに Marasca cherries のようだとか。）バルベーラ好きのよめは、コストパフォーマンスも手伝って大満足。

2006 was an exceptional year in Piedmont and allowed these grapes to get an extra level of ripeness with a quasi late harvest. Barbera grapes naturally have high acid so the extra ripeness is easily carried with the great structure in this wine. I find that Barbera not unlike Pinot Noir elevates its aromatics when planted in limestone soils and the complexity in this wine is really unique. The wine is fermented in open topped wooden vats with a touch of carbonic maceration and then moved to Tonneaux the 500 liter barrels a bit bigger than 2 barriques for 18 months of aging. This wine exudes Marasca cherries and if you have never had real Marasca cherries well you won't know the degree to which you are missing the flavors there is nothing like this flavor. There is a certain wildness in the wine an earthy complexity that mingles with the sweet, fragrant powerful focus of the fruit. The wine is rich, fleshy and succulent yet very well balanced, it has an amazing drinkability it just seems to flow and it is so easy to drink. I like to think this is a BBQ wine and this time of the year with something off the grill it would be spectacular. One note of caution when the temperatures get warms you should make sure your red wines are in the 60's temperature wise, it helps tremendously.

Barbera d'Asti （バルベーラ・ダスティ）はピエモンテ州の主に Asti 地方で作られる、イタリアのバルベーラでは最も有名なDOCGワイン（※2008年にDOCからDOCGに昇格）。85%以上のバルベーラ種が義務付けられている。Barbera d'Asti ワインは鮮やかな色でエレガント、一方 Barbera d'Alba は濃い色で骨格があり力強い果実味のあるワインに仕上がる傾向にある。最低アルコール度数12.5%以上、最低熟成期間1年以上（うち6ヶ月以上は樽熟成）を満たした Barbera d'Asti は "Superiore" を名乗ることが出来る。

2度目のバルベーラ・ダスティ。とはいえ、その他のバルベーラ種との区別がつくほど飲んだ経験はないけれど。最初変な香りがしたけれど時間と共に消えた。酸味豊富なバルベーラ。軽やかな飲み口はカリフォルニアにおけるピノのような位置づけ。でもバルベーラ種の中では重めだったように思う。100% Barbera。

Oltrepò Pavese （オルトレポー・パヴェーゼ）という、イタリア・ロンバルディア州で造られるDOCワイン。ピノの印象に近いけれどピノとは違う、ならばバルベーラ。珍しいノンヴィンテージ。濃厚なプラムやチェリーの果実味。かすかにスパイシーさがあるから甘ったるくならない。パワフルだけど飲みやすい。飲みやす過ぎて進んでしまう。

実は Whole Foods のバイヤーが買い付けるワインはあまり好みにあわないのだが、想像よりずっとよかった。10ドル以下のデイリーワインとしては買い。

2006 Palmina Santa Barbara County Barbera

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラにあるイタリア品種専門のワイナリー Palmina。ワインメーカーの Steve Clifton 氏は Sta. Rita Hills にあるブルゴーニュ品種に力を入れるワイナリー Brewer-Clifton でワインメーカーとして勤める傍ら、イタリア品種にも惹かれ、独自のラベルで Palmina を立ち上げる。サンタバーバラ・カウンティで育ったイタリア品種を使いワインを造っている。

ワイナリーで試飲して気に入った Barbera 種。バルベーラはカリフォルニアでいうピノのような位置づけと言われる。このバルベーラはピノより酸味があり、パワフルな鮮やかさ。もう少し寝かせたらほとばしるパワフルさが落ち着くのかな。でも、やはりバルベーラは結構好きな品種かも。

Barbera is known worldwide for its intense color, and the 2006 Barbera, Santa Barbara County more than steps up to the plate. A deep rub-red color with violet hues foretells of the dark fruit profile in the glass. A swirl releases a bouquet of ripe plum, blackberry and black currant along with subtle traces of nutmeg and toasted vanilla. On the palate, the wine is mouth-coating and silky and just plain friendly! イタリア・ピエモンテ州のワイナリー Tenuta Garetto （テヌータ・ガレット）。無名だったワイナリーだが、Gambero Rosso （イタリアで最も権威あるワイン評価本「Vini d'Italia」（ミシュランみたいなもの）を出版する食の総合誌。）で高評価を受ける。Favà という畑名はイタリア語で "そら豆" の意味。

香りと口に含んだ瞬間に、ほとばしるようなフルーティさ。例えるならカリフォルニアのピノに近いけれど、カリフォルニアワインより元気がいい。そのパワフルな印象が典型的なイタリアワイン。サンジョベーゼより少しだけ軽くフルーティなのがバルベーラなのかも。しばらく飲んでいると思ったより重さを感じる。度数も高いので、暑い日には向かないかも。

The colour is dark, ruby-red, almost impenetrable. Refinement in wood intensifies the bouquet with red berry fruit, plum, vanilla and liquorice scents. The taste is properly tannic; the acidity merges with fullness and full-bodiness, leaving a persistent and pleasant aftertaste. It is a great structure wine that can be drunk with more than 10 years aging, without prejudicing quality and pleasantness. It is ideal with rich dishes, such as red meat and game.

100% Barbera。初バルベーラ。完全にピノだと思った。某ワイナリーの人が Barbera 品種は Pinot Noir のような位置づけ、軽めのテーブルワイン、と説明していたのを思い出す。
