2000 Jean Leon Gran Reserva Penedes

スペイン・バルセロナ近郊の Penedes （ペネデス）地方のワイナリー Jean Leon （ジャン・レオン）。創設者であるジャン・レオン氏は19歳でアメリカに渡り、ハリウッドでフランク・シナトラがオーナーを勤めるレストランでウエイターの職を得、レストランの顧客であった有名スターたちと友人となり、「生前のマリリン・モンローに会った最後の人物」とも言われている。その後、生前のジェームス・ディーンとの約束であったレストラン La Scala （ラ・スカラ）をハリウッドに開業。1964年に母国スペインに戻り、故郷のペネデス地方にてワイン造りを始める。スペインで初めてカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンやシャルドネを植樹したワイナリーで、スペインにおけるフランス品種ワインの先駆者的存在。このカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンの苗木は、ジャン氏がフランスのシャトー・ラフィット・ロートシルトから極秘裏に持ち帰ったと言われている。ジャン氏は晩年病に苦しみ、1996年にこの世を去る。ワイナリーは1994年に Miguel Torres （ミゲル・トーレス）の傘下に入り、ジャン・レオンのポリシーを忠実に受け継いだ、彼の名を冠したワインを造り続けている。

今回飲んだのは、そのこだわりのカベルネが植えられた La Scala Vineyard の100% カベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン。グラン・レゼルバ。2年間フレンチオークで熟成させた後、2003年にボトリング、出荷までに最低3年ボトルで熟成させている。11年物。古酒のニュアンスはさほど強くないが、タンニンが弱まっていて薄目の味わいになっている。自己主張は弱目ながらも、落ち着いた上質なカベルネの味わい。

2004 Kathryn Kennedy "Small Lot Cabernet" Cabernet Sauvignon

Saratoga にあるワイナリー Kathryn Kennedy Winery。自社畑 Estate Vineyard は7エーカーのみで、100% Cabernet Sauvignon を造る少量生産主義。おっととよめは3年以上前のK&Lテイスティングで試飲して以来、そのハイエンドなカリフォルニアのカベルネの大ファン。

今回飲んだのは Estate ではないが Santa Cruz Mountains の北から南までのよいブドウを買い付けて造っている少量生産 Small Lot Cabernet。90% Cabernet Sauvignon、10% Merlot。3年前のテイスティングで気に入って購入し、3年間寝かせた一本。ちょうど良く熟成が進み、枯れてはいないものの角は取れて妖艶な香りが出てきた飲み頃の一本。

カリフォルニア州ナパで知らない人はいないであろう Robert Mondavi Winery （ロバート・モンダヴィ・ワイナリー）。創設者の Robert Mondavi 氏は、ナパのワインを今日の地位まで引き上げた、誰もが認めるナパ繁栄の立役者であり、その功績から "2007 California Hall of Fame （カリフォルニア名誉の殿堂）"にも選ばれている。ワイナリーを設立したのは1966年で、なんと彼が52才のとき。それまで Charles Krug というワイナリーを一族で経営していたが、世界レベルのワインを作りたいという、当時は無謀としか思えない希望を抱いたロバートが一族と反目して分かれて作ったのが Robert Mondavi Winery なのである。肝心のワインに関しても、さまざまな品種を作っているが「ハズレ」がほとんどないのにも感心させられる。しかし業績不振のため、既にワイナリーは氏の手から世界最大のワインカンパニー Constellation Brands に売却されている。2008年5月16日ナパの自宅で死去。享年94歳。

26年物のナパ・カベルネ。1985年はワイン・スペクテーターが97点を与えた80年代を代表する良年のひとつ。色は熟成による完全な美しいレンガ色。26年経った今でも果実味、ほのかな樽香、しっかりとした骨格が残っていて、造りの実力を実感。今回のは並みワインだが同年のリザーブはさらに素晴らしいのだろう。

カリフォルニア州ナパの名門ワイナリー St. Clement （サン・クレメント）。1987年に日本企業サッポロが買収、Sapporo を逆に文字った最高級ボルドーブレンドワイン Oroppas （オロパス）をリリース。1999年にナパの Beringer が再買収後、2001～2004まで4年連続 Robert Parker 氏が 90 スコア以上をつけるというカリフォルニアの中では最高級 Cabernet Sauvignon のうちの1本となる。Cabernet Sauvignon をベースに Merlot、Petit Verdot、Cabernet Franc などがブレンドされている。（ブレンド比率はヴィンテージによって異なる。）今回飲んだ2006年は 86% Cabernet Sauvignon、9% Merlot、3% Cabernet Franc、2% Petite Verdot のブレンド。

K&Lで Oroppas がセールになっていたので迷わず購入。熟成していない新しいニューワールドのカベルネ好きの友人のために用意した一本。完熟した果実味とジャムやチョコレートのような濃厚さ。比較的若いビンテージということもあり、ナパのカベルネらしい強烈さは残しつつ、ボルドーブレンドのまろやかなまとまりも兼ね備えた、期待通り美味しいナパのカベルネ。

Rich and concentrated, this wine opens with aromas of black plum, vanilla, brown sugar and cinnamon. On the palate, flavors of black currant, roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are wrapped in velvety tannins. Notes of dark chocolate and raspberry jam lead to a long finish. Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot were blended in to enhance the structure and mid-palate weight. 2009 Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon

"Two Buck Chuck" （2ドルワイン）の愛称で有名な Trader Joe's の Charles Shaw。生産者は Bronco Wine Company で、全米第4位の巨大ワイン製造者。カリフォルニアの Central Valley に35,000エーカーを超える畑を持ち、ブドウはすべてカリフォルニア産。Cabernet Sauvignon、White Zinfandel、Merlot、Chardonnay、Sauvignon Blanc、Shiraz、Beaujolais Nouveau などをラインナップとする。値段以上の美味しさで、コストパフォーマンスは最高。日々のテーブルワインとしては充分な味。

タンニンや複雑さはないものの、カリフォルニアのカベルネらしい自己主張がきちんと感じられる一本。久し振りに飲んだけれど悪くない。たまに飲むには問題ないレベル。

NV Three Wishes California Cabernet Sauvignon

オーガニック・フード、ベジタリアン・フード、健康食品に力を入れるアメリカの高級志向系グローサリーストア Whole Foods が、同じくユニークなアメリカのグローサリーストア Trader Joe's の "Two Buck Chuck" （2ドルワイン）の愛称で有名な Charles Shaw に対抗して販売を開始した Three Wishes。ワイナリーはカリフォルニア州の Livermore と Ripon にある。現在、Chardonnay、Merlot、Cabernet Sauvignon の3品種をノンヴィンテージ（NV）で生産。

薄っぺらいプラムジュースのような果実味だけが印象に残る。日本で飲む国産の安いワインのような感じ。同時に飲み比べた2ドルワイン Charles Shaw のカベルネ に軍配。

Whole Foods の Three Wishes のワインボトルは、Eco-Glass を採用。ボトルに使うガラスの量を25%削減して重さを軽くすることで、輸送にかかる燃料を削減することで、二酸化炭素の排出量も削減し、環境に配慮する取り組み。ただし、サイトには "the wine inside is just as good." とはあるが、ワインに与える影響は不明。

2005 Clos Du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州ナパ、Stags Leap District にあるワイナリー Clos Du Val （クロ・デュ・ヴァル）。アメリカのビジネスマン John Goelet （ジョン・ゴレ）と、Château Lafite-Rothschild （シャトー・ラフィット・ロートシルト）のテクニカル・ディレクターを父に持つフランス生まれのワインメーカー Bernard Portet （ベルナール・ポルテ）の2人により1972年に設立。設立4年後にして、1976年に行われたかの有名なパリ対決（パリ・テイスティング：Paris Tasting of 1976）にて、カリフォルニアを代表する6本のワインの1つに選出される。「ボルドー・ワインは熟成に時間がかかる」という理由で10年後に同じワインでリベンジ大会が行われ（French Culinary Institute Wine Tasting of 1986）、並み居るボルドーの一級品たちを返り討ちにした第2回大会の覇者が 1972 Clos Du Val。これにより世界的名声を決定付け、カリフォルニアでもトップ・ワイナリーの１つとして知られ続けている。ナパヴァレーの類まれなブドウを使い、とヨーロッパの伝統的手法を用い、古き良きエステート・スタイルのワインを目指している。

この 2005 Clos Du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon は、記念年ワインとして2年おきに飲んでいる。

パワフルでフルボディ、ブラックカラントやカシス、濃厚なブラックベリー系。とげとげしさや若すぎる感じもなく、エレガントささえ感じる。王道の、しかも美味しいナパのカベルネ。去年2004を飲んだときより今年飲む2005のほうがずっといい印象。85% Cabernet Sauvignon、10% Cabernet Franc、3% Merlot、2% Petit Verdot。

2007 Ghost Block Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州ナパの中心、Oakville 地区で造られている Ghost Block （ゴースト・ブロック）。醸造設備のレンタルやワインメイキングに必要な様々なサービス提供を行うオーダーメイド・ワイン・システム Napa Wine Company の醸造部門統括兼セラーマスターを務める Rob Lawson （ロブ・ローソン）氏が立ち上げた Bonded Winery #9 の代表ブランド。オーガニックな Cabernet Sauvignon 100% から造られており、わずか30,000本と少量生産。2008年 San Francisco Chronicle 紙が発表した "The new cult wines: 10 wineries to watch" （次世代カルトワイン十傑）の造り手のひとつでもあり、Ghost Block も「次世代カルトワイン」として高い人気を集めている。

ブラックフルーツの果実味豊か、フルボディでカリフォルニア・ナパを代表するようなカベルネ。果実味を全面に出しつつも、深みとのバランスが心地いい。いいナパCab。力強い肉料理によくあう。もう少し熟成させて飲んでも面白そうな1本。

カリフォルニア州ナパの Stag's Leap 地区にある Stag's Leap Wine Cellars。Stag's Leap Wine Cellars が世界のワイン界にその名をとどろかせたのは、フランスのワインを抜いて1位に輝いた1976年のパリ対決（パリ・テイスティング：Paris Tasting of 1976）。最高級ブレンドである CASK 23 は、自社畑である S.L.V. Vineyard と FAY Vineyard の最もよいブドウをブレンドしている。Artemis は自社畑 S.L.V.、FAY、Arcadia に加え、優良な契約畑のブドウをブレンドしたブランド。同ワイナリーは、近年イタリアの名門 Antinori （アンティノリ社）ともパートナーシップを持つ Ste. Michelle Wine Estates に買収される。

2003 Mayacamas Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州、ナパとソノマを隔てる Mayacamas Mountains に位置する Mayacamas Vineyards （マヤカマス・ヴィンヤーズ）。Mt. Veeder （マウント・ヴィーダー）の火山口に位置するこのワイナリーは100年以上の歴史を持つ。1976年の名高いパリ・テイスティング（Paris Tasting of 1976）でカリフォルニアワインが赤白共に1位を収めた中、マヤカマスのカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンは7位に入賞しその評価を高める。30年後に行われた再対決（Judgment of Paris）ではカリフォルニアワインが再び1位から5位を独占、マヤカマスのカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン 1971 はここでも3位に輝いている。長年気になっていたそんな Mayacamas のカベルネ。

開けて暫くは以前別のワインでも感じた事のある硫黄系の香り（還元臭？）がしたものの、しばらくすると無くなる。2003というヴィンテージより古いワインのように思える熟成感。だが、終始酸味が強く、バランスが悪い。期待が大きかっただけに残念。80% Cabernet Sauvignon、10% Cabernet Franc、10% Merlot。
