カリフォルニア州ソノマのワイナリー Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery。近年注目を集める Sonoma Coast 地区において、太平洋岸に沿うように18の小さなブロックが連なった自社畑 Fort Ross Vineyard は、カリフォルニアで最も海に近いブドウ畑のひとつであり、カリフォルニアの強い日差しと洋上からの冷気という対極に見舞われるピノノワールやシャルドネ造りに最良のロケーションにある。2003年には Freeman、August West のワインメーカー Ed Kurtzman （エド・カッツマン）と、10年間に渡り Dehlinger に携わったワインメーカー Fred Scherrer （フレッド・シェア）を招き、高い評価を受け続けている。今回のシャルドネも Wine Enthusiast 誌の2011年トップ100において第28位にランクイン。

「多くの白ワインをデキャンタするけれど、オーク（樽）が強いものは特にデキャンタしている。それによって、香り高くなるし、表情豊かになる。」というサンフランシスコ・ワイン日記のゴマさんの記事を読んだ直後で、カリフォルニアの若めのシャルドネということもあり、初めて白ワインをデキャンタージュ。強烈なミネラル感と程よい樽香が絶妙に調和しており、おっとにはなかなかのヒット。全てが濃い、お買い得でハイエンドな味わいのカリフォルニアのシャルドネ。

This golden Chardonnay finely balances layers of intense fruit with the natural acidity and minerality characteristic of the Fort Ross coastal climate. Generous aromas of white flowers, autumnal pear, and honeydew melon lead a complex palate of succulent apricot, sweet peaches with a drop of honey and spiced hazelnuts. Bottled unfined and unfiltered contributed to the seamless silky texture and lengthy focused finish.

2007 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Arcadia Vineyard Chardonnay

カリフォルニア州ナパの Stag's Leap 地区にある Stag's Leap Wine Cellars。Stag's Leap Wine Cellars が世界のワイン界にその名をとどろかせたのは、フランスのワインを抜いて1位に輝いた1976年のパリ対決（パリ・テイスティング：Paris Tasting of 1976）。自社畑は S.L.V.、FAY、Arcadia。最高級ブレンドである CASK 23 は、自社畑である S.L.V. vineyard と FAY vineyard の最もよいブドウをブレンドしている。同ワイナリーは、近年イタリアの名門 Antinori （アンティノリ社）ともパートナーシップを持つ Ste. Michelle Wine Estates に買収される。

今回飲んだのシャルドネは、1996年に Mike Girgich 氏から購入した Arcadia Vineyard のもの。古典的なブルゴーニュのシャブリに近いシャルドネと評されるだけあり、カリフォルニアのシャルドネでありながらミネラルが強く上品。久し振りにこんなに美味しいカリフォルニアのシャルドネを飲んだ。

2009 Russian River Vineyards "Common Thread" Chardonnay

カリフォルニア州ソノマ Russian River Valley にあるワイナリー Russian River Vineyards。ベタなネーミングながらもワイナリーとしては同地有数の歴史を誇っており、現在は新しい5人の共同オーナーによってオーガニックでモダンなワイナリーへの変化を遂げようとしている。レストラン Corks at Russian River Vineyards も敷地内に持つ。ワインメーカーは5人のオーナーのうちの1人、Anthony Austin 氏。

久々に飲むクリスプ系の、良い意味でストレートで分かりやすいシャルドネ。樽香は無く、アルコール度数も12.9%と低め。おっとにはなかなか好評。

Pouilly-Fuissé （プイィ・フュィッセ）は、Burgundy （ブルゴーニュ）の Côte d'Or （コート・ドール県）の南の Mâcon （マコン地区）に位置し、Pouilly-Fuissé という村名（アペラシオン）を名乗ることができる5地域のうちの1つ。（それ以外のマコン地域のワインの多くはマコン・ヴィラージュ Mâcon-Villages と総称される。）色が薄く爽やかでドライ、繊細で素晴らしい Chardonney を造る地方で、マコンの中では人気のあるアペラシオン。ブルゴーニュの白ワインの入門編として、とてもいいワインとの評判も。※Loire Valley （ロワール）の Pouilly-sur-Loire で造られる Sauvignon Blanc、Pouilly-Fumé （プイィ・フュメ）と混同しないように。

造り手である René Guérin （ルネ・ゲラン）氏は、プイイ・フュイッセの名人であったらしい。酸の質、ブドウの根の深さに由来するミネラルと滋味の豊かさといったワインのバランスを大切にし、20年経っても活き活きとした味わいを保つという。（1997年以降のヴィンテージは見当たらない。）

K&L のお買い得コーナーで見つけた44年物。1967年はおっととよめ史上最古のビンテージ。古い白ワイン特有の紹興酒のような香り。グラスを遠ざけてもシャルドネの芳香を強く感じられる。明らかにピークは過ぎているものの、この古さでこのしっかりとした骨格には驚き。きちんと造られたブルゴーニュ白ワインの底力を感じた。

カリフォルニア州ナパの中でも最も古いワイナリーのひとつ Beringer Vineyards。1876年にドイツ系移民である Beringer Brothers （べリンガー兄弟、当時ドイツ語読みでべリンガーと発音）が創業し、禁酒法の時代（1920年～1933年）にもミサ用ワインの製造許可を与えられたことから、絶え間なくワインを製造している最も古いワイナリーとなった。現在はビール大企業 Foster's Group の傘下にある。（Foster's Group の傘下は他にも Chateau St. Jean、Etude、St-Clement、Stags' Leap Winery、Penfolds など多数。）

数年寝かせて今がちょうど飲み頃の Beringer のフラッグシップ・シャルドネ。濃いめの黄金色で、焦がした樽香を強く感じる。熟成されたトロピカルフルーツ感が複雑。ブルゴーニュのシャルドネと比べると大味で強烈な印象だが、よく造られたカリフォルニアのシャルドネだと感じさせる味わい。

The Beringer's northernmost Chardonnay vineyards, Gamble Ranch, Big Ranch Road and Yountville Vineyard, are located around the town of Yountville, where daytime temperatures slowly climb as the cooling morning fog recedes south to San Pablo Bay. This significant diurnal shift allows the grapes to maintain their acidity, which is essential to balancing the ripe, rich flavors they develop during warm afternoons. As harvest approached, Winemaster Ed Sbragia together with Winemaker Laurie Hook worked closely with vineyard manager Jim Frisinger to identify the blocks and rows that had reserve potential.

"For the 2004 vintage, Ed and I were particularly impressed with our Gamble Ranch vineyard, which makes up 73 percent of the blend in this Private Reserve. The unique flavor profiles contribute to a rich reserve wine while letting the fruit characteristics shine through," said Laurie Hook, winemaker.

フランス・ブルゴーニュの Puligny-Montrachet （ピュリニー・モンラッシェ村）最高峰の生産者にして世界屈指のシャルドネでもある Domaine Leflaive （ドメーヌ・ルフレーヴ）。名声の高かった Vincent Leflaive （ヴァンサン・ルフレーブ）が1993年に亡くなり、娘の Anne Claude （アンヌ＝クロード）が受け継ぐ。醸造責任者の Pierre Morey （ピエール・モレ）と共に素晴らしいワインの数々を造り出している。畑の化学肥料を減らす為に Biodynamic （バイオダイナミック、ビオデナミ）栽培法を取り入れ、単位面積の収穫量もかなり減らしたブドウ造りにこだわる。今回飲んだのは、そのルフレーブが2008年よりネゴシアンとして造る Leflaive & Associes の一本。ネゴシアンとは言え、ドメーヌが年間を通じて栽培農家と密接に連携を取っており、収穫に至っては完全にドメーヌ主導で行っている。醸造は他のルフレーブ・ワインと同様、ドメーヌ自身が自らの施設で行っている。

ルフレーヴに恋する友人宅で頂いた久々のルフレーブ。Rully （リュリー）は Côte Chalonnaise （コート・シャロネーズ）のAOC。バターのような樽香はしっかりで濃厚だが主張しすぎず繊細。以前飲んだ Les Pucelles と比べるとフレッシュで今すぐ飲むのに適しているワイン（Les Pucelles は熟成させて飲みたい）。

Saint Aubin （サン・トーバン村）の一級畑 En Remilly （アン・レミリィ）は、Burgundy （ブルゴーニュ）の Côte d'Or （コート・ドール県）の南下半分、Côte de Beaune （コート・ド・ボーヌ地方）に位置する。Montrachet （モンラッシェ）のセカンド的に扱われるが、このアン・レミリィ畑は Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru （シャサーニュ・モンラッシェ村の一級畑）の真横にあり、斜面の向きが違うものの条件的にはモンラッシェに限りなく近い土壌といわれている。

Puligny-Montrachet と St. Aubin の間の Gamey （ガメ村）に位置するドメーヌは、昔はすべてのブドウをネゴシアンに売っていたが、現在のオーナーである4代目 Sylvain Langoureau （シルヴァン・ラングロー）氏の代から自らもワイン生産を始め、ドメーヌとしての道を歩み始めた。St. Aubin、Meursault、Puligny、Chassagne に畑を持っているが、St. Aubin のワインが看板。

2007年ビンテージを一昨年に飲んでおり、期待の一本。以前よりも樽香のようなバター系の味が強く感じられたものの、カリフォルニアとは明らかに違う上品なシャルドネ。

This vineyard is one of the best in the village, located immediately adjacent to Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru vineyards and a stone's throw from Le Montrachet. This is quite sweet and forward, with a nice thread of minerality running through it. This is drinking very nicely, indeed, and very reminiscent of a Chassagne Montrachet, at a fraction of the cost. NV Three Wishes California Chardonnay

オーガニック・フード、ベジタリアン・フード、健康食品に力を入れるアメリカの高級志向系グローサリーストア Whole Foods が、同じくユニークなアメリカのグローサリーストア Trader Joe's の "Two Buck Chuck" （2ドルワイン）の愛称で有名な Charles Shaw に対抗して販売を開始した Three Wishes。ワイナリーはカリフォルニア州の Livermore と Ripon にある。現在、Chardonnay、Merlot、Cabernet Sauvignon の3品種をノンヴィンテージ（NV）で生産。

香りは控えめで、ややケミカル臭い感じがする。同時に飲んだ Two Buck Chuck のシャルドネよりもやや薄っぺらい印象。温度が落ち着いてくると Two Buck Chuck との違いはほとんどない。樽香はほとんど感じられず、よく言えば飲みやすい。

Whole Foods が販売する Three Wishes のワインボトルは、Eco-Glass を採用。ボトルに使うガラスの量を25%削減して重さを軽くすることで、輸送にかかる燃料を削減することで、二酸化炭素の排出量も削減し、環境に配慮する取り組み。ただし、サイトには "the wine inside is just as good." とはあるが、ワインに与える影響は不明。

2009 Charles Shaw Chardonnay

"Two Buck Chuck" （2ドルワイン）の愛称で有名な Trader Joe's の Charles Shaw。生産者は Bronco Wine Company で、全米第4位の巨大ワイン製造者。カリフォルニアの Central Valley に35,000エーカーを超える畑を持ち、ブドウはすべてカリフォルニア産。Cabernet Sauvignon、White Zinfandel、Merlot、Chardonnay、Sauvignon Blanc、Shiraz、Beaujolais Nouveau などをラインナップとする。値段以上の美味しさで、コストパフォーマンスは最高。日々のテーブルワインとしては充分な味。

久々の Two Buck Chuck は普通に飲めるレベル。同時に飲んだ Whole Foods の2ドルワインよりも果実味はやや強め、多少よい意味での苦味も感じられる。温度が落ち着いてくると Whole Foods の2ドルワインとの違いはほとんどない。樽香はほとんど感じられず、よく言えば飲みやすい。

フランスのシャブリ地方にある小さなワイナリー Domaine Hervé Azo。2005年にシャブリで最も知名度の高いドメーヌのひとつ Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard に売却される。"Vau de Vey （ヴォー・ド・ヴェイ）" はシャブリ地方の 1er Cru （一級畑）で、かなりの急斜面にあり、一級銘柄の中でも優秀で安定した高品質を保つ畑として知られている。

Chablis （シャブリ）は、フランス・ブルゴーニュにある村で、ブルゴーニュを代表する辛口白ワイン「シャブリ」の産地として知られている。シャブリ地方は、キンメリジャンと呼ばれる石灰岩（Kimmeridgian limestone）を主体にした、ミネラル分が豊富な土壌であるため、シャルドネの栽培に適している。辛口でミネラルに由来するバニラやピーナッツのような優れた香りを持つ。

ボトルで飲むのは2度目のシャブリ。（もっとたくさん飲んでいるような気がしていたが。）最初はかなり温度が低く、シャルドネとは思えない控えめな味わい。クリスプなグリーンアップルのよう。開いてくると豊富なミネラル感が現れるものの、カリフォルニアのシャルドネのような強い果実味とマロラクティック感は全く感じられず。これが古典的なシャブリ？もう少し経験を積みたい。100% Chardonnay。
