Heitz Cellars "Ink Grade" Napa Valley Port

カリフォルニア州ナパの St. Helena にある元祖カルト系 Cabernet Sauvignon で有名な歴史あるワイナリー Heitz Cellars （ハイツ・セラーズ）。1976年パリ･テイスティング（Judgement of Paris 1976）の30周年を記念した2006年リターンマッチ（30th Anniversary Celebration）にて、パリの名だたるワイナリーを抑え Cabernet Sauvignon 部門総合評価第3位に輝く。観光地化するナパにあって未だテイスティング無料という良心的なワイナリー。

Touriga Nacional、Tinta Roriz、 Sauzao、Tinta Cao、Tinta Bairrada、Tinta Madeira、Tinta Amarela 、Bastardo と本場ポルトガルのポートワインに使用される品種をナパで育てたブドウで造られているポートワイン。カリフォルニアによくある、ジンファンデルで造られているただの甘すぎるポート系のデザートワインとは違い、本物のポートに近い複雑で少し苦みのある味わい。

2007 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Arcadia Vineyard Chardonnay

カリフォルニア州ナパの Stag's Leap 地区にある Stag's Leap Wine Cellars。Stag's Leap Wine Cellars が世界のワイン界にその名をとどろかせたのは、フランスのワインを抜いて1位に輝いた1976年のパリ対決（パリ・テイスティング：Paris Tasting of 1976）。自社畑は S.L.V.、FAY、Arcadia。最高級ブレンドである CASK 23 は、自社畑である S.L.V. vineyard と FAY vineyard の最もよいブドウをブレンドしている。同ワイナリーは、近年イタリアの名門 Antinori （アンティノリ社）ともパートナーシップを持つ Ste. Michelle Wine Estates に買収される。

今回飲んだのシャルドネは、1996年に Mike Girgich 氏から購入した Arcadia Vineyard のもの。古典的なブルゴーニュのシャブリに近いシャルドネと評されるだけあり、カリフォルニアのシャルドネでありながらミネラルが強く上品。久し振りにこんなに美味しいカリフォルニアのシャルドネを飲んだ。

1985 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州ナパで知らない人はいないであろう Robert Mondavi Winery （ロバート・モンダヴィ・ワイナリー）。創設者の Robert Mondavi 氏は、ナパのワインを今日の地位まで引き上げた、誰もが認めるナパ繁栄の立役者であり、その功績から "2007 California Hall of Fame （カリフォルニア名誉の殿堂）"にも選ばれている。ワイナリーを設立したのは1966年で、なんと彼が52才のとき。それまで Charles Krug というワイナリーを一族で経営していたが、世界レベルのワインを作りたいという、当時は無謀としか思えない希望を抱いたロバートが一族と反目して分かれて作ったのが Robert Mondavi Winery なのである。肝心のワインに関しても、さまざまな品種を作っているが「ハズレ」がほとんどないのにも感心させられる。しかし業績不振のため、既にワイナリーは氏の手から世界最大のワインカンパニー Constellation Brands に売却されている。2008年5月16日ナパの自宅で死去。享年94歳。

26年物のナパ・カベルネ。1985年はワイン・スペクテーターが97点を与えた80年代を代表する良年のひとつ。色は熟成による完全な美しいレンガ色。26年経った今でも果実味、ほのかな樽香、しっかりとした骨格が残っていて、造りの実力を実感。今回のは並みワインだが同年のリザーブはさらに素晴らしいのだろう。

2008 Paloma Merlot

カリフォルニア州ナパ、Spring Mountain にあるワイナリー Paloma （パロマ）。2003年に Wine Spectator 誌が "2001 Paloma Merlot" を Wine of the Year に選んだことであっという間にプレミアワインの仲間入り。他から購入したブドウを使ったシラーも Palomita というラベルで生産しているものの、メインはメルローのみというこだわりの造り手。2008年にワイナリーを訪問。

まだ若めのメルロー。メルローに少量のカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンをブレンド。ナパらしい強めの果実味と、強烈なスパイシーさが印象的な一本。味わいは複雑で、ココアのようなフィニッシュが後に残る。カリフォルニアの中でもビッグでガツンとした美味しいメルロー。

Our Merlot is a blend of Estate Merlot and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon ranges from 12 to 18 percent depending on the vintage. The grapes for this wine are picked in very small amounts as each area of the vineyard reaches its peak of ripeness. The grapes are then de-stemmed and the individual berries cracked open by our 20-year-old Healdsburg stemmer/crusher (with the crusher rollers removed) and fermented in small open top fermenters or small stainless steel tanks. After fermentation the pomace is gently pressed in an old fashioned basket press and each pick is put into a stainless steel tank to settle off the gross lees. The wine then goes into our new or used French oak barrels for 19 months of barrel aging.

The resulting wine is a big, world-class red wine capable of improving with bottle aging for 10 to 15 years in most vintages. Although the wine varies with the vintage, they have a consistent thread of complex aromas of black berry fruits, black stone fruits, chocolate, tobacco, spice and floral notes with a mineral overtone. On the palate the wine has a big silky mouth feel, well balanced, with flavors of berries, fruit, cocoa, cassis, and spice, and a long spicy finish. Fruit tannins in our wines tend to be big, but not harsh and are well integrated with the strong fruit component.

カリフォルニア州ナパの中でも最も古いワイナリーのひとつ Beringer Vineyards。1876年にドイツ系移民である Beringer Brothers （べリンガー兄弟、当時ドイツ語読みでべリンガーと発音）が創業し、禁酒法の時代（1920年～1933年）にもミサ用ワインの製造許可を与えられたことから、絶え間なくワインを製造している最も古いワイナリーとなった。現在はビール大企業 Foster's Group の傘下にある。（Foster's Group の傘下は他にも Chateau St. Jean、Etude、St-Clement、Stags' Leap Winery、Penfolds など多数。）

数年寝かせて今がちょうど飲み頃の Beringer のフラッグシップ・シャルドネ。濃いめの黄金色で、焦がした樽香を強く感じる。熟成されたトロピカルフルーツ感が複雑。ブルゴーニュのシャルドネと比べると大味で強烈な印象だが、よく造られたカリフォルニアのシャルドネだと感じさせる味わい。

The Beringer's northernmost Chardonnay vineyards, Gamble Ranch, Big Ranch Road and Yountville Vineyard, are located around the town of Yountville, where daytime temperatures slowly climb as the cooling morning fog recedes south to San Pablo Bay. This significant diurnal shift allows the grapes to maintain their acidity, which is essential to balancing the ripe, rich flavors they develop during warm afternoons. As harvest approached, Winemaster Ed Sbragia together with Winemaker Laurie Hook worked closely with vineyard manager Jim Frisinger to identify the blocks and rows that had reserve potential.

"For the 2004 vintage, Ed and I were particularly impressed with our Gamble Ranch vineyard, which makes up 73 percent of the blend in this Private Reserve. The unique flavor profiles contribute to a rich reserve wine while letting the fruit characteristics shine through," said Laurie Hook, winemaker.

カリフォルニア州ナパの名門ワイナリー St. Clement （サン・クレメント）。1987年に日本企業サッポロが買収、Sapporo を逆に文字った最高級ボルドーブレンドワイン Oroppas （オロパス）をリリース。1999年にナパの Beringer が再買収後、2001～2004まで4年連続 Robert Parker 氏が 90 スコア以上をつけるというカリフォルニアの中では最高級 Cabernet Sauvignon のうちの1本となる。Cabernet Sauvignon をベースに Merlot、Petit Verdot、Cabernet Franc などがブレンドされている。（ブレンド比率はヴィンテージによって異なる。）今回飲んだ2006年は 86% Cabernet Sauvignon、9% Merlot、3% Cabernet Franc、2% Petite Verdot のブレンド。

K&Lで Oroppas がセールになっていたので迷わず購入。熟成していない新しいニューワールドのカベルネ好きの友人のために用意した一本。完熟した果実味とジャムやチョコレートのような濃厚さ。比較的若いビンテージということもあり、ナパのカベルネらしい強烈さは残しつつ、ボルドーブレンドのまろやかなまとまりも兼ね備えた、期待通り美味しいナパのカベルネ。

Rich and concentrated, this wine opens with aromas of black plum, vanilla, brown sugar and cinnamon. On the palate, flavors of black currant, roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate are wrapped in velvety tannins. Notes of dark chocolate and raspberry jam lead to a long finish. 2005 Domaine Carneros Estate Pinot Noir

カリフォルニア州ナパとソノマにまたがる Carneros 地域に、18世紀フランスの宮殿のようにそびえるワイナリー Domaine Carneros （ドメーヌ・カーネロス）。フランス・シャンパーニュ地方の超名門 Taittinger （テタンジェ）が1987年にアメリカ進出を果たしたスパークリングワイン・メーカー。テタンジェが全面監修するだけあり、使用する果汁は一番絞りのみ、伝統的シャンパンの製法である瓶内二次醗酵に始まり、熟成に至るまで3年を超える熟成後のリリースなど、徹底品質を追求したその製法は本格的。米国最上級のスパークリングワインを世に送り出している。

Domaine Carneros が世に送る数少ないスティルワイン。スティルワインは基本的にピノ・ノワールだけを生産しており、フラッグシップの The Famous Gate は有名。今回飲んだのは並クラスの Estate Pinot Noir。空けた瞬間、ホコリっぽいを通り越してカビのような香りが鼻につく。かなり時間が経って多少良くなったけれど、痛んでると思われる残念な一本。

パワフルでフルボディ、ブラックカラントやカシス、濃厚なブラックベリー系。とげとげしさや若すぎる感じもなく、エレガントささえ感じる。王道の、しかも美味しいナパのカベルネ。去年2004を飲んだときより今年飲む2005のほうがずっといい印象。85% Cabernet Sauvignon、10% Cabernet Franc、3% Merlot、2% Petit Verdot。

2007 Ghost Block Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州ナパの中心、Oakville 地区で造られている Ghost Block （ゴースト・ブロック）。醸造設備のレンタルやワインメイキングに必要な様々なサービス提供を行うオーダーメイド・ワイン・システム Napa Wine Company の醸造部門統括兼セラーマスターを務める Rob Lawson （ロブ・ローソン）氏が立ち上げた Bonded Winery #9 の代表ブランド。オーガニックな Cabernet Sauvignon 100% から造られており、わずか30,000本と少量生産。2008年 San Francisco Chronicle 紙が発表した "The new cult wines: 10 wineries to watch" （次世代カルトワイン十傑）の造り手のひとつでもあり、Ghost Block も「次世代カルトワイン」として高い人気を集めている。

ブラックフルーツの果実味豊か、フルボディでカリフォルニア・ナパを代表するようなカベルネ。果実味を全面に出しつつも、深みとのバランスが心地いい。いいナパCab。力強い肉料理によくあう。もう少し熟成させて飲んでも面白そうな1本。
