2005 Turley Old Vine Zinfandel

カリフォルニア・パソロブレスにあるワイナリー Turley Wine Cellars。カリフォルニアの Zindandel の最高峰とも言われ、ワイナリーからワインを購入するメーリングリストに入るために、ウェイティングリストで待たなければならないというほどの人気ワイナリー。カリフォルニアに来た直後に私たちがジンファンデルに目覚めたワイナリーでもある。元 Frog's Leap Winery の共同経営者でもあった Larry Turley （ラリー・ターリー）氏が1993年に Frog's Leap を離れて Turley を設立。Old Vine （古樹）の Zindandel に大きなこだわりを持つ。今回の Juvenile （ジュヴナイル）はターリーのレギュラーワインのひとつで、その名の通り樹齢の若い樹から造られる。畑はソノマの Dry Creek Valley。

4年以上前にワイナリーにて購入した一本。パソロブレスの濃厚な味わいと、適度な熟成から生まれた上品なまろやかさが印象的。ジンファンデルらしいスパイシーな感じは強いものの、フランス・ローヌ風の渋くて複雑な味わいが強い。コストパフォーマンスも非常によい。まさに飲み頃だったのだろう、久し振りに高い満足度の熟成ジンファンデルを堪能。

Classic. Cherries, berries and spice with Kirsch liqueur and a hint of oak. Bright red fruits in mouth, good tannin structure and a straight up delicious finish. This wine is a clear expression of what we're trying to do when it comes to working with old vine Zinfandel.

2010 Vina Robles Huerhuero Estate Viognier

カリフォルニア州パソロブレスのスタイリッシュなワイナリー Vina Robles （ヴィーニャ・ロブレス）。「I want Vina Robles to express a unique balance of European heritage and American opportunity.」 と言うように、オールドワールドとニューワールドの絶妙なバランスを具体化したワイン造りを信条としている。

僅か8樽のみの少量生産のヴィオニエ。時々ある、香りも果実味も強すぎるヴィオニエとは違い、よい意味でやや控え目な存在感。それでもヴィオニエ特有の白い花の香りは健在で、酸味とのバランスが絶妙。カリフォルニアで出会ったヴィオニエの中ではおっとのベストかもしれない。

Viognier is planted in our Huerhuero Vineyard as it is the highest and benefits from the cooling Pacific breezes that blow through the Templeton Gap in the afternoon. The fruit was hand picked in early September and only the ripest, highest quality bunches were selected. Following, the fruit was pressed resulting in low yields of fragrant juice. Fermentation took place in three year old French oak barrels. The wine was aged for a period of 180 days and lees stirring took place twice a week to improve mouth feel and add complexity. This wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Prior to bottling, the wine was filtered for better clarity and stability. Only eight barrels of this wine were produced.

2008 Josefina Syrah Rosé

カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスにあるワイナリー San Antonio Winery （サンアントニオ・ワイナリー） が Trader Joe's 向けに製造しているブランド Josefina。1917年創業の同ワイナリーは1920年の禁酒法の後ワイン造りを再開、建造物はロサンゼルスの42番目の歴史的建造物に指定されている。ブドウは、モントレー、サン・ルイス・オビスポ（Paso Robles）、ナパを始めとするカリフォルニア中から集められ、テーマや品種ごとに、14を超えるブランドでワインを生産・販売している。

「ホワイト・ジンファンデルではなく、南仏のドライなロゼをイメージして」というバックラベルのコメントに興味を持ち購入。シラーのロゼというのも面白い。色調はやや濃いめだが、味はフランス・ローヌの Tavel （タヴェル）等のように濃すぎることは無く。かなり辛口な味わいの中にほんのりと甘みを感じる程度。値段の割には悪くない。

2006 Villa Creek "Avenger" Paso Robles

カリフォルニア州パソロブレスにあるワイナリー Villa Creek Cellars。2007年10月の Food and Wine 誌上で、かのロバート・パーカーに「パソロブレスで一番好きなワイナリーの１つだ （Villa Creek is one of my favorite wineries in Paso Robles.）」とまで言わしめた同ワイナリーは、主にローヌ系の様々な赤ワインを生産している。

今回飲んだ Avenger （「仇を討つ者」を意味する）は、シラーを主体としたブレンドワイン。2006年のブレンド比率は 50% Syrah、30% Mourvèdre、20% Grenache。パソロブレスらしく濃厚な味わいは残しつつも、どことなく繊細で複雑な味わいがとても魅力的な一本。

Avenger is our Syrah based blend, which launched the Villa Creek wine program back in 2001. While much has changed for us since that inaugural vintage, Avenger remains a favorite in the line-up. The 2006 Avenger is comprised of Denner and Booker Vineyard fruit. The grapes from these vineyards continue to gain complexity and richness with age, and this just may be the richest bottling of this wine to date.

2005 Five Rivers Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州パソロブレスにあるワイナリー Five Rivers Winery。赤い女性像が飛び回るイラストが可愛いボトルデザイン。（女性特有の癌に対する意識改革の取り組みに力を入れているよう。）

パソロブレスといえばジンファンデル。ジンファンデルのようなフルーツフォワードのカベルネを期待していたら、思ったよりおとなしい。ナパのカベルネとは全然違う印象。それでもフルボディなので夏の暑い日にはあまり進まず。日が経つにつれて飲みやすくなる。値段を考えれば普通なデイリーワイン。91% Cabernet Sauvignon、5% Merlot、2% Malbec、2% Petite Verdot。

This Paso Robles Cab is deep, dense and rich. This wine emphasizes aromas of hazelnut, currant and black plum, with evident toasty oak from the melange of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels carefully selected for the fruit. The mouthfeel is full, with dense, almost plush tannins and flavors of plum and lingering tobacco finish. It shows the best Paso Robles.

カリフォルニア州パソロブレスにある J.Lohr Winery （ジェイ・ロアー・ワイナリー）。現在 Arroyo Seco （Monterey County）、Paso Robles （San Luis Obispo County）、Napa Valley に3,000エーカーにも及ぶ自社畑を持つ巨大ワイナリー。Paso Robles と San Jose にテイスティングルームがある。以前飲んだ Hilltop が印象的。

フルボディ系のメルロー。ブルーベリーのような深いフルーツ味。スパイシーさ（樽？）が強い。メルローならもう少しマイルドなほうが好き。82% Merlot、5% Cabernet Sauvignon、4.5% Cabernet Franc、3.3% Malbec、2.7% Petit Verdot、2.5% Petite Sirah。細かい。。

The 2006 J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot has a dark plum red color with purple hues. The aroma is dominated by blueberry, raspberry and cherry fruit and layered with lifted spicy, cedary oak. The palate is greated by an array of red fruits similar to those on the nose, with tar, cedar and forest floor adding complexity. The wine has a full mid?palate and finish that carries the wine through, with a lingering hint of fruit and licorice spice. This wine would be ideal with roasted beef or lamb with a berry-based reduction sauce. Enjoy now or within ten years.

カリフォルニア州 Paso Robles （パソ・ロブレス）地方にある L'Aventure winery （ラヴァンチュール・ワイナリー）。フランスの St. Emilion 出身の Stephan Asseo （ステファン・アセオ）氏は、がんじがらめのボルドーAOC法の規制の中でのワイン造りではなく、自分の求めるワイン造りとテロワールを求めて世界中を捜し回り、パソ・ロブレスに辿り着く。Robert Parker 氏が「パソ・ロブレスで最も感動的なプロデューサーの１つ」に挙げ、2004 Estate Cuvee がパソ・ロブレス産ワインとしては異例の Robert Parker 98 ポイントを獲得。

すでにブラインド7本目。すごい経歴のワイナリーにも関わらず、よめはほとんど記憶に残らなかったワイン。可もなく不可もなく。おっとは美味しかったらしい。（その割にはコメントなし。）こういうブレンドは難しい。51% Syrah、44% Cabernet Sauvignon、5% Petit Verdot。

The least expensive red wine is the Optimus cuvee. The 2005 Optimus (51% Syrah, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot) barely qualifies as a Rhone Ranger, but it offers classic chocolate, cassis, espresso, and subtle wood notes along with a dense ruby/purple hue, gorgeous concentration, and plenty of spice, cedar, and a Pauillac-like complexity and richness. This serious effort is more French than Californian. It should drink well for 6-10 years. Transplanted Frenchman, Stephan Asseo (from St.-Emilion), has found a home as well as some great terroirs in the limestone soils of Paso Robles (all his vineyards are situated on the western side of Highway 101). Asseo continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L-Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent. (06/08)

2005 David Bruce Central Coast Petite Sirah

カリフォルニアの Los Gatos にあるワイナリー David Bruce Winery。Santa Cruz Mountain に自社畑を持つ。French Oak を使いブルゴーニュに近い味わいを持つ Pinot Noir を造ることで有名。

紫がかった濃い色。ものすごく凝縮されたフルーティさ。（なるほど、ブルーベリーだ。）どっしりした重さもあり、カリフォルニアで時々出会うフルーティなカベルネかと思ってしまった。期待していた Petite Sirah の味とは違うけど、まぁ悪くない。Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard の Durif のほうがおっとよめ共に好み。

2005 Paul Valmer California Merlot (Whole Foods Market 365)

Whole Foods ブランド 365 Everyday Value のバイヤー買い付けの Merlot。軽めでかなりフルーティなメルロー。舌に絡み付く芳醇な果実味。フルーティなのが好きな人なら買い。興味深いことに、4日経っても味が変わらない不思議なワイン。

※Whole Foods 店頭のワイン情報では "French Wine" となっているが、ボトルには "Vined and Bottled by Paso Robles Wine Co. California Merlot" と明記されている。どちらなのか不明。

Trader Joe's で買ってきたマスカット。デザートワインを語れるほど舌が肥えていないが、Robert Mondavi などのマスカットと比べると深みがなく、値段相応だなーという印象。375ml でこの値段なので決して格安というわけでもなく。
