今回飲んだ Mt. Harlan Cuvée は、日本のグルメ雑誌 Dancyu 2008年12月号で大賞をとった一本。数年前に購入したもので、栓は珍しいガラスキャップ。リッチでジャミーな味わいは、ソノマのピノともサンタバーバラのピノとも異なる独特なもの。時間が経ちワインが開いてくると、複雑さが増して美味しい。もう少し若く飲んでも良かったのかもしれない。

The grapes for this wine were all grown on the slopes of a 3-million-ton limestone deposit located 2,200 feet above sea level. Geologists describe this limestone as "Paleozoic marble" that is between 225 million and 560 million years old. Its influence on the soils and the deeper ground beneath the vines imparts complexity and subtle flavors to the grapes and hence, the wine. We selected the barrels that went into this wine to give you a wine that can be enjoyed young.

K&Lのお買い得コーナーで見つけた古いヴィオニエ。「ヴィオニエは早く飲むもの」と一般的に言われているので期待せず、でもカレラということもあり、話のネタに購入。ヴィオニエらしい芳香は殆ど残っていないけど、果実味と土台となる酸味はしっかりと残っていて、22年経ってもきちんと飲める状態。熟成したドイツワインのような感じもあり、期待以上。

カレラには古い順に Jensen （ジャンセン）、Reed （リード）、Selleck （セレック）、Mills （ミルズ）、Ryan （ライアン）という5つの畑があり、今回はその中の Mills。ピノにしてはどっしりとした重さがある。ソノマやサンタバーバラのピノと比べて果実実が凝縮されている感じがする。7年という熟成が絶妙な熟成感と古さを出していて大変美味しい。飲み頃だった。

The 2002 Mills is a forward and aromatic wine. Notes of ripe strawberries, black plums, black pepper and vanilla are prevalent in both aroma and flavor. As is characteristic of Pinot Noir from the Mills Vineyard this wine has excellent structure with a core of well defined tannin under its fleshy, velvety texture.

2002 was an excellent growing season for Pinot Noir on Mt. Harlan. Early budbreak followed by a summer of mild days and cool nights prolonged the hang time, giving us exceptional quality and intense fruitiness in the grapes. The fruit was hand-picked starting in mid-September. Each lot was fermented whole cluster, with indigenous yeast in small open top fermenters. The wines were pressed after 14 days and racked by gravity to barrels following overnight settling. Aged without racking in Francois Freres barrels, 30% new, for sixteen months, the barrels were combined prior to bottling and the wine was bottled unfiltered.

カレラには古い順に Jensen （ジャンセン）、Reed （リード）、Selleck （セレック）、Mills （ミルズ）、Ryan （ライアン）という5つの畑があり、今回はカレラの単一畑で最高人気の Jensen。2005 は Thirtieth Anniversary Vintage （30周年記念ヴィンテージ）。最初は若いブルゴーニュのピノだと思ったが、時間が経つにつれてどんどん開いていき、素晴らしい香りと味に変化。カリフォルニアのピノだと思って飲んでもブルゴーニュのように感じられた1本。

This 2005 Jensen expresses dense plum and black fruit aromas accented by faint anise and white pepper. Flavors broaden with cola and bing cherry, toasty oak and lush but firm tannins. Nicely balanced, and still quite tight, this vintage will reward us with a few years in the cellar. A modicum of air will help open this beauty up for near term sipping.

2006 La Nebbia San Benito Sangiovese

Half Moon Bay にあるワイナリー La Nebbia Winery で直接ボトリングしてもらうワイン。今回は 100% Sangiovese。ワイナリーでテイスティングしたときはとてもフルーティ、値段相応のワインだと思ったが、イタリアの美味しい Brunello di Montalcino の直後に飲んでしまうと見劣りし過ぎ。。

芳醇な香りのヴィオニエ。きんきんに冷えた状態から室温になってくると、ピーチや梨などさらに色々な香りがしてくる。きりり感（ミネラル？）も多少感じられて美味しい。翌日は少しえぐみを感じたので1日目のほうがいい。ガラスのキャップなんて初めて。

カレラには古い順に Jensen （ジャンセン）、Reed （リード）、Selleck （セレック）、Mills （ミルズ）、Ryan （ライアン）という5つの畑があり、今回はその中の Mills。色は鮮やかなルビー。ものすごいストロベリーの香り！加えて、有機溶剤のような強烈な香りが襲ってきて驚く。口に含むと、香りとは一転スパイシーさが広がる。しばらく置くとスパイシーさが取れ、エレガントになった。Calera のワイン、2002 Mills はもっとどっしりタンニンが効いていた（らしい、過去メモによると）。

Sweet red fruit notes of raspberry and tart cherry highlight the aroma of the 2003 Mills Pinot Noir. This multi-faceted Pinot displays loads of bright varietal character, with ripe fruit enhanced by flavors of black tea, subtle toasted oak and just a hint of licorice. This is a robust wine, full bodied with crisp acidity and enough smooth tannin to ensure that it will age beautifully for years to come.

2004 Léal San Benito Estate Syrah

Gilroy の少し南にある Hollister という地域にある Léal Vineyards。Syrah 好きの友人一押しのワイナリーからは遠くまで平地と丘が見渡せ眺めは最高。この Estate Syrah は 100% Syrah で、Syrah っぽさがぎゅっと凝縮されている感じ。濃い色、スムースな口当たりがとても美味しい。おっと絶賛。
