2005 Longoria Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラにある家族経営・少量生産ワイナリー Longoria Wines （ロンゴリア・ワインズ）。1982年創業。オーナー兼ワインメーカーの Rick Longoria （リック・ロンゴリア）氏は、Gainey のワインメーカーも兼務していたが、1997年 Longoria のワイン造りに専念。同氏の品質への強いこだわりで、創業30年経った現在でも各ワインにつき50ケースから700ケース以上は生産していない。

最初少し固かったものの、しばらく置くと秦が強い南のピノの味わい。サンタバーバラらしいスパイシーさと豊かな黒い果実の味わい、酸味。複雑で美味しい。アルコール度数高めというコメントが多かった（実際に14.1%）。サンタバーバラのピノを飲むのはほぼ2年ぶり。

After several years of sparse Pinot Noir crops, the bountiful crop levels of our area Pinot Noir vineyards in 2005, including Bien Nacido were a welcome occurrence. Still, the diligent grape grower had to drop excess crop in order to balance the vines and to enhance the ripening process and achieve optimal color and flavor concentration in the wines. Such was the case at Bien Nacido, with the crop in our block of grapes averaging slightly less than 3.5 tons per acre.

We followed our established winemaking regime of 100% destemming the grapes, crushing into small open top fermenters and conducting a two week fermentation.

The wine aged in French oak barrels of which around 33% were new. Fining and filtration took place in late August, just prior to bottling.

The wine has a medium dark color with violet hues. The aroma is a complex array of Asian spices, sandalwood, and candied beets. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, with an exquisite balance of flavor components, acidity and oak nuances. The result is a nearly perfect balanced wine, where all the components are in harmony. As a winemaker this is what I try to achieve in all of my wines, but some wines, such as this wine, demonstrate it better than others.

Suggested food pairings include quail, veal and salmon.

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラ Los Olivos にあるワイナリー Koehler Winery （コーラー・ワイナリー）。1997年創業。創業最初はブドウを他のワイナリーに売るのみだったが、すぐに自らワインを造り始める。

ワイナリー訪問時に美味しかった記憶のあるシラー。香りはとてもいい。味は果実味に富み、フルボディでねっとりとしたカリフォルニアらしいシラー。よめのタイプ。

2007 Four Vines "Naked" Santa Barbara Chardonnay

カリフォルニア州パソロブレスにあるワイナリー Four Vines Winery。ワインメーカーの Christian Tietje 氏は、Paso Robles、Sonoma、Napa、Amador といったカリフォルニア中の様々な地域の特性を活かしたジンファンデル造りに情熱を注いでいる。

今回飲んだのは、樽を使わずステンレスタンク発酵させたシャルドネ。自然体のシャルドネ種という意味をこめてワイン名も "Naked"。樽発酵を行っていないので（No Oak）バターのような香りはないが、マロラクティック発酵のとろみは感じる。と思ったら、K&Lによるとマロラクティック発酵もさせてないらしい。。。えー。辛口でよい苦味のあるシャルドネ。

(Nov. 30, 2008) Winemakers like to do it naked! Who says chardonnay needs to be cloaked in all that malo and oak? This "naked" style chardonnay from the irreverent folks at Santa Barbara's Four Vines, is 100% stainless steel fermented, is NOT put through malolactic fermentation and sees nary a splinter of oak. The results? A crisp chardonnay that's like drinking a mountain orchard: apple, peach and pear fruit with just a little hint of stony minerality. Drink naked before, during and after dinner!

2005 Lafond SRH Chardonnay

かなりフルーティで甘めだが、樽香が強すぎずよめは好みのシャルドネ。

A blend of four neighboring vineyards, the 2005 Chardonnay SRH is winemaker Bruce McGuire’s selection to showcase the ripe, concentrated Chardonnay for which the Santa Rita Hills is known. Bruce had each vineyard block picked as the fruit ripened about two weeks later than average in October.

This wine is a good choice to pair with many cows’ milk cheeses such as Brie or Camembert and, as a nice surprise; the fantastic washed-rind triple-creme Cow Girl Creamery Red Hawk. Richer foods such as roast chicken or whole, farm raised striped bass are also ideal pairings.

This bottling will reward aging through 2009 and promises to be quite showy through 2112.

2007 Melville Verna's Vineyard Estate Syrah

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラで大変人気の高いワイナリー Melville Vineyards and Winery。1989年創立。創業者の Ron Melville （ロン・メルヴィル）氏は、10年間ソノマの Knight's Valley （ナイツヴァレー）で醸造学を学びブドウを造ってきたが、ブルゴーニュワインへの情熱からサンタバーバラへ移り、Sta. Rita Hills の畑を購入。（Santa Rita Hills の気候は、海からの冷たい風と午前中の霧の影響で極めて冷涼な気候に恵まれ、ブルゴーニュ地方のブドウ品種である Pinot Noir や Chardonnay、そして Northern Rhone Syrah の育成に向いている。）ワインメーカーは Greg Brewer （グレッグ・ブリュワー）氏。氏は同時に Steve Clifton （スティーブ・クリフトン）氏と共にワイナリー Brewer-Clifton も手掛けている。

St. Rita Hills AVA （formerly named Santa Rita Hills AVA through 2006）の Pinot Noir や Chardonnay は北カリフォルニアのワインショップでも見かけるが、Estate Vineyard の Terraces や Carrie's は入手困難で、リリースと同時にメーリングリスト登録者優先にあっという間に売り切れてしまう人気振り。

自社畑である Vernar's Vineyard を飲むのは Viognier、Pinot Noir に続き3本目。ブラックベリー系の非常に果実味豊かなシラー。ハーブのスパイシーさ、チョコレートのような濃厚さ。でもカリフォルニアや南半球のような爆弾的シラーではなく、複雑かつ上品。シラーにも力を入れている Melville。さすがの1本。

Immediately noticeable are heady spice components of dried herb, anise, white pepper, lavender, pumpkin pie and tamari that juxtapose against notes of black cherry, dark tropical fruits and purple beets. Aromas redolent of sweet barbeque, gunpowder and worcestershire sauce play with a floral perfume of honeysuckle and wisteria. Texturally, the wine is velvety, savory and streamlined finishing with both gumption and grace.

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラの Arroyo Grande AVA （アロヨ・グランデ）にあるワイナリー Laetitia Vineyard & Winery （ラテイシア・ヴィンヤード＆ワイナリー）。かつてフランスで高く評価されていたシャンパンハウス Champagne Deutz （ドゥーツ）が優れた Pinot Noir と Chardonnay の地であるアロヨ・グランデに Maison Deutz を設立。その後、1997年に畑のオーナーであった Jean-Claude Tardivat （ジャン・クラウド・タルディヴ）氏がこれを買い取り、娘の名前を取って Laetitia と改名。スパークリングワインからスティルワインへとシフトしていった。

2006 Reserve Pinot Noir は Wine Enthusiast が "Laetitia's best reserve ever." と賞している1本。芳醇な香り、重過ぎないミディアムボディ。王道のカリフォルニアの南のピノ。よめは飲みすぎてとても進む美味しいワインということだけが記憶に残る。

This rich wine opens with gently perfumed notes of cherry, rose petal, Asian spice, cola, smoke, and damp earth. The bouquet continues on the palate, medium bodied, round, silky and welcoming. カリフォルニアの Santa Maria 地方 にあるワイナリー Qupé Wine Cellars （キュペ・ワイン・セラーズ）。1982年創業。オーナーの Bob Lindquist （ボブ・リンクイスト）氏は、1989年に良き先輩であり親友である Au Bon Climat の Jim Clendenen （ジム・クレンデネン）氏と共同醸造設備を建て、年に一度ワインビジネスにおける技術やアイディアを共有している。Qupe は Syrah や Grenache といったローヌ品種とシャルドネに力を入れており、50%のワインがサンタバーバラでも有数なブドウ畑である Bien Nacido Vineyard （ビエン・ナシッド・ヴィンヤード）のブドウで造られている。

2005年は Central Coast および Bien Nacido において非常に良年だったそう。落ち着いた上品なイメージのシラー。適度なフルーツ味とシラーらしいスパイシーさのバランスがとてもいい。サンタバーバラのシラーで感じる特有の臭さがなかった（by おっと）。元々サンタバーバラのシラーが好みのよめは、シラーにしてこの優雅さに感動。100% Syrah。

2005 was an amazing harvest in the Central Coast and one of out best ever at Bien Nacido. A long, even growing season was followed by perfect ripening conditions in the Fall.
This is a classic vintage of Bien Nacido Syrah - structured, balanced, spicy with persistent fruit. The aromas show typical cool climate character of white and black pepper, thyme and dried raspberries. Tannins are moderated by rich fruit and spices with the kind of refreshing acidity that makes you want more. This 2005 ranks among our best ever and will age nicely for 10-15 years.

2003 Foxen Foothills Reserve Santa Ynez Valley Red Table Wine

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラにある Foxen Winery and Vineyard。映画 『Sideways』 のワンシーンで主人公の2人が訪れている。サンタバーバラのワイナリースタッフがこぞってお薦めするワイナリーとの評判も。1985年創業以来、少量生産、ワイン造りには最小限の手しか加えないという方針を貫いている。白、ピノ、ローヌスタイル、ボルドースタイルと、様々なワインを造っている。

ワイナリーでの試飲でおっとが気に入り購入した1本。65% Merlot、35% Cabernet Franc と、ボルドー右岸スタイルのブレンド。ピノ生産の多いサンタバーバラにおいて、どっしりとしたフルボディのワイン。試飲したときより深みと果実味が増している。余韻が長い。ワイナリーでしか手に入らない（らしい）。

The Fruit from this vintage was sourced primarily from the Vogelzang Vineyard, which is situated in Happy Canyon where these Bordeaux varietals grow so well - and happily! カリフォルニアの北と南のピノの飲み比べ。
今回飲んだのは Los Alamos にある Verna's Vineyard のピノ。期待通り、南のピノっぽい感じがする。若いからかしばらくは固い感じが残る。ところが、2時間くらい置いておくとまとまってきて、落ち着いたブルゴーニュのような美味しいピノに。ゆっくり飲めてよかった。

Garnet hued, this wine is reminiscent of a wild red fruit pie consisting of strawberry, raspberry and cherry balanced by oral essences of rose petal, sandalwood and orange blossom. Earthy elements of forest oor, red roasted beets and chanterelles also intermingle with hints of cinnamon spice, thyme, lavender and pink peppercorns. The wine is gracious and giving on the palate nishing with excellent length.

2006 Palmina Santa Barbara County Barbera

カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラにあるイタリア品種専門のワイナリー Palmina。ワインメーカーの Steve Clifton 氏は Sta. Rita Hills にあるブルゴーニュ品種に力を入れるワイナリー Brewer-Clifton でワインメーカーとして勤める傍ら、イタリア品種にも惹かれ、独自のラベルで Palmina を立ち上げる。サンタバーバラ・カウンティで育ったイタリア品種を使いワインを造っている。

ワイナリーで試飲して気に入った Barbera 種。バルベーラはカリフォルニアでいうピノのような位置づけと言われる。このバルベーラはピノより酸味があり、パワフルな鮮やかさ。もう少し寝かせたらほとばしるパワフルさが落ち着くのかな。でも、やはりバルベーラは結構好きな品種かも。

Barbera is known worldwide for its intense color, and the 2006 Barbera, Santa Barbara County more than steps up to the plate. A deep rub-red color with violet hues foretells of the dark fruit profile in the glass. A swirl releases a bouquet of ripe plum, blackberry and black currant along with subtle traces of nutmeg and toasted vanilla. On the palate, the wine is mouth-coating and silky and just plain friendly! There is a depth of blueberry-plum and black cherry fruit, sweet baking spices and a hint of chocolate, a bit of earthy-mineral character, soft and pleasing tannins and a lively acidity that then leads to a cherry cobbler finish. Beautifully balanced, this is a wine with harmony.
