2004 Kathryn Kennedy "Small Lot Cabernet" Cabernet Sauvignon

Saratoga にあるワイナリー Kathryn Kennedy Winery。自社畑 Estate Vineyard は7エーカーのみで、100% Cabernet Sauvignon を造る少量生産主義。おっととよめは3年以上前のK&Lテイスティングで試飲して以来、そのハイエンドなカリフォルニアのカベルネの大ファン。

今回飲んだのは Estate ではないが Santa Cruz Mountains の北から南までのよいブドウを買い付けて造っている少量生産 Small Lot Cabernet。90% Cabernet Sauvignon、10% Merlot。3年前のテイスティングで気に入って購入し、3年間寝かせた一本。ちょうど良く熟成が進み、枯れてはいないものの角は取れて妖艶な香りが出てきた飲み頃の一本。

2004 Testarossa Schultze Family Vineyards Pinot Noir

カリフォルニア州のサンタクルーズ・マウンテンにある Testarossa Vineyards。1993年、Rob & Diana Jensen （ロブ＆ダイアナ・ジェンセン）夫妻により設立。1888年から続くカリフォルニアで4番目に古い歴史を持つワイナリー Novitiate Winery （pronounced no-vish-ut）の全施設を1997年に長期リリースすることに成功し、そこで Testarossa ワインを造り始める。Testarossa とは、イタリア語で "red-head" の意味。創設者 Rob Jensen のイタリア学生時代のニックネームに由来しているのだそう。以降、数々のワインがワイン各誌で90ポイント以上の評価を獲得。カリフォルニアワインのピノ・ノアール＆シャルドネ愛好家の間で知らない人はいないワイナリー。

Schultze Family Vineyard は Santa Cruz Mountains AVA の畑。同じストロベリーでもソノマとはまた違う香り。酸味がちょうどいい具合に熟成して深みに変わっている。さすが Testarossa 。まさに飲み頃だった1本。

Aromas of strawberry and ripe cherry are first on the nose. Upon further study, the nose resonates with more subtle aromas of black pepper, cinnamon, and cream. Hints of cream, strawberry, and red cherry lead into this plush, youthful wine. Finely integrated tannins and tamed acidity congregate nicely on the lingering finish. This wine should drink well now and up to at least 6-7 years.

2001 Hallcrest Vineyards Santa Cruz Mountains Proprietor's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

カリフォルニア州サンタクルーズマウンテンにあるワイナリー Hallcrest Vineyards。1941年設立。初ヴィンテージは1946で、このとき Hallcrest Vineyards はサンタクルーズマウンテンで3つあるワイナリーのうちの1つであり、唯一自社畑（estate vineyards）でワインを造っていたワイナリーだった。

エレガントなラベル。ナパのように強烈なカベルネでなく、程よいタンニンと熟成感。2001で飲み頃だったように思う。

2004 Picchetti Mission Angelica

カリフォルニア州サンタクララにあるワイナリー Picchetti Winery。Picchetti Winery はイタリアからの移民 Vincenso & Secondo Picchetti 兄弟によって1800年代後半に設立。カリフォルニアでは最も古いワイナリーのひとつ。Vincenso Picchetti の息子は鳥をこよなく愛しており、現在もワイナリーの広い芝生にはクジャクが放し飼いにされている。住宅街クパティーノから近いためアクセスもよい。

今回の Angelica は White Port タイプのデザートワイン。2003までは Chardonnay から造られていたが、2004はカリフォルニアで最も古い伝統的な品種である California Mission Grapes を使用。White Port の美味しい飲み方、氷を浮かべレモンやオレンジを絞って飲む。糖度は高いが甘すぎずすっきり飲める食前酒。

This Angelica wine is made from California Mission Grapes and is representative of the type of wine which was first produced in the Santa Clara Valley in the 1890s. It is the oldest variety of wine grape cultivated in California today and has great historical significance as it defined California viticulture for over a century.

We have added brandy to the fermenting grapes which stops the fermentation process, leaves a sweetness to the wine and acts as a preservative, which is why the wine was popular in the old days.

Our modern day preference is to enjoy this historic wine chilled over ice with a lemon twist.

カリフォルニア州サンタ・クルーズ・マウンテン（Santa Cruz Mountains）の Monte Bello Ridge の頂に位置する実力派ワイナリー Ridge Vineyards。フラッグシップであるカベルネブレンドの Monte Bello やジンファンデルが有名。

カリフォルニアワインの実力を世界に知らしめた1976年のパリ対決（パリ・ティスティング：Paris Tasting of 1976）から30年後の2006年。30年前と同一のワイン、同一のヴィンテージを再び利き比べする記念テイスティングが行なわれ、フランスの Chateau Mouton-Rothschild （ムートン）や Chateau Haut-Brion （シャトー・オー・ブリオン）などを押さえ、1971 Ridge Monte Bello が堂々一位に輝き、カリフォルニアワインも十分に熟成に耐えうることを証明した。

そのパリ対決30周年記念テイスティングの若いワイン部門（カリフォルニア赤）で見事第一位に輝いたのが、今回飲んだ 2000 Ridge Monte Bello。初！待望の Monte Bello。色が濃い。重過ぎないがしっかり主張するタンニンがプティシラーのようで、上品なブラックベリーの果実味が王道カベルネブレンド。1971 のように30年越しで飲んでみたい。75% Cabernet Sauvignon、23% Merlot、2% Cabernet Franc。

ワインショップ K&L に Cronin の古いビンテージが大量入荷。何本かを試飲。

3本目は、Red Table wine。ブレンド品種は不明。Joe は一番目の息子の名前。これまでの Cronin の中では最も古く最も飲み応えのあるワイン。1990年（18年物）、カベルネがいい具合に熟成した風合。この値段なら買い。

1本目は、50% Syrah、38% Zinfandel、12% Grenache というローヌブレンドの1999年物。最初はすごい卵臭！（後で調べると、亜硫酸臭、酸化防止剤を用いすぎると硫黄臭や腐った卵の臭いがするのだとか。これがいわゆる還元臭と呼ばれる臭いだったよう。）味も酸っぱい。時間が経つと卵臭は取れたが、味は変わらず。"たまごっち" の愛称がついた残念な1本。

※「還元臭」とは
発酵中・発酵直後のワイン、密閉式の醸造設備で醸造したワインや窒素ガスを充填したワイン、亜硫酸値が低い（もしくは無添加）ワインなどの開栓直後などにみられ、ゴムタイヤや痛んだタマネギ、ニンニク、茹でたキャベツ（メチオノール）、腐った茹で卵のような匂い（硫化水素）と感じる。アルコール発酵中に生成される硫黄化合物、チオール化合物が原因物質。ほとんどは抜栓後に空気に触れさせることで解消される。

2001 Silver Mountain Vineyards Alloy

Los Gatos の南、Santa Cruz Mountains にある100%オーガニックなワイナリー Silver Mountain Vineyards。今回飲んだ Alloy はボルドーブレンド・シリーズ。62% Cabernet Sauvignon （from Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Clara Valley）、32% Merlot （from Silver Mountain's estate vineyard）、6% Petit Verdot （from Santa Clara Valley）と、3つの畑のブドウをブレンド。とてもフルーティなブラックベリー系で Merlot かと思わせる。Paso Robles のカベルネに近い印象。
